What do you do when you have a wiggly tooth? Do you wiggle it until it comes out? Or do you let it be and wait for it to fall out? As a kid, I was a wiggler. I was eager to get that tooth out and for my visit from the tooth fairy. To my surprise, both of my girls wait until their teeth fall out. My youngest daughter refuses to lose teeth. Each time she has a new wiggly one, it becomes a big ordeal in our house. Fear sets in on what to do and if it will hurt. I am not allowed to even look at her wiggly tooth. As though I have magical powers and I can will the tooth out!
Over the last few years, I have learned it is best to let the tooth be. Even if that poor tooth is hanging by a thread. Even when that tooth has lost most of its color because it is no longer attached to the gums. Trust me, in the past, I have made bribes. If you lose that tooth by x, I’ll take you to x. Unfortunately, it never works.
Our last tooth was never going to fall out. Wiggly since Christmas Eve, I was certain it would be there for months (and it was). Sydney had become an expert chewer. Avoiding putting any kind of pressure on her wiggly tooth. Apples were sliced instead of eaten straight off the core, Sydney would refuse to eat her favorite foods knowing mommy might have had a hidden agenda. (Okay, I’m exaggerating a little, but still, that tooth wasn’t going anywhere!)
Finally one morning, Sydney woke up and her tooth was missing. Gone. Vanished. She had lost it in her sleep. She was so happy that she wasn’t awake to feel the pain of losing her tooth. When she came to our room to share the wonderful news we danced around. And then we when looking for that missing tooth. I am happy to report we were able to find the missing tooth in her bed and she placed it in her tooth fairy pillow. I am sorry to report that the tooth fairy skipped our house that night, but did come later the next day! The tooth fairy must have had a lot of houses to visit.
