My Very First Blog Post: A Look Back

Five months ago, I wrote my very first blog post. Let’s take a look back at what I discovered about blogging. In the last twenty weeks, I have grown so much. (Yes, I am writing about this like I am pregnant! And no, although it is a labor of love, childbirth is still harder.) Writing a blog is like being becoming a parent because it fills you with questions like:

Am I ready?

Will I be good enough?

When will this get easier?

How many mistakes am I going to make?

And am I going to ruin everything?

But then I have realized:

So much about this process has been learning as I go. Knowing I would make mistakes and lots of them. Before, I could never share anything personal. Most people would be surprised to learn I am an introvert. Blogging has stretched me in a good way. Continuing to grow and challenging myself was the main reason to blog. Every time I write, I am doing this for my clients and my family. Blogging has become my living journal, the stories behind my photographs. Perhaps my biggest lesson to date was my unintended consequence from the last week.

An unintended consequence:

The phone rang, it was my mom. Our conservation started like most. Small talk, and then she asked if we could meet for breakfast. At first, I was caught off guard because I couldn’t remember the last time we met for breakfast. Meeting for lunch had become more typical. I didn’t really think I had time to meet. Work has been keeping me busy. And Zach’s preschool schedule makes it difficult to meet in the mornings.

Finally, she stopped and told me I had made her cry. Instantly, I felt like a teenager in trouble; crap, what did I do?!? She confessed she was embarrassed it had taken her so long to read my blog. A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog for her birthday where I shared about our breakfast birthday tradition. She cried because she told me my blog was the best gift I could have given her and she was moved by our story.

See, this was the unintended consequence of blogging I never expected. Personally, I don’t REALLY believe that anyone is reading this. But, if it caused my mom to want to relive our breakfast tradition, it’s all the reason I need to continue to blog.

Breakfast at Jewel’s Bakery and Cafe was amazing!! Back in 2007, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Ever since I have been on a strict gluten-free diet. So much has changed these last ten years. Most places have a few gluten-free options. Jewel’s Bakery and Cafe is all gluten-free!
